How much do you know about the physical and “emotional” qualities of the light used to take your photographs? Do you let your camera’s auto functions control such basic qualities as exposure, color balance and even focus? Today’s modern digital cameras are certainly technological marvels with their “auto everything” controls. But the photographer still needs a good working knowledge of how light controls the appearance of everything in a scene. Otherwise, it will be the camera’s auto technology and not the photographer’s vision that dominates much of the outcome.
In this seminar, Joseph Meehan will first review the key physical characteristics of photographic light and the specific camera functions that record those characteristics. He will then explain and illustrate how the photographer can recognize such influential conditions as the effect of light direction, how color and contrast in a scene can be altered, how to determine the most appropriate exposure setting, how the speed of an exposure alters the way light portrays a subject and even how different lens focal lengths have an influence on the way light is recorded. The goal of this seminar is to help the photographer develop a personal system to recognize the photographic qualities of light and how to use various camera controls to capture those qualities.
