Interview with Artist in Residence, Rachel Brown
The final workshop with our Artist in Residence, Rachel Brown, was offered today (October 25, 2017). We so enjoyed having her teach at the Centre! If you missed being able to take a workshop with her, take the time to read our interview with her below! Rachel Louise Brown makes responsive work based on interactions with the unfamiliar. She observes the world as a stage, exploring alone and occasionally populating the images with willing strangers. Through these interactions, Brown endeavors to question the construction of society and to give a platform for the people and places that come before her lens. Rachel Louise Brown graduated from the Royal College Of Art in 2011 (MA photography), following a critical certificate in photography in 2009 (School Of Visual Arts, NYC) And BA (Hons) Photography (London College Of Communication) in 2008. Brown has exhibited and completed artist residencies internationally and is currently working on a solo show at the Palm Beach Photographic Centre, opening in 2018. Alongside her practice, Brown is photography director of Harper’s Bazaar and Town & Country (UK editions) and regularly mentors students at UAL. She has previously worked for Steven Klein (production), British Vogue (freelance picture editor) and British photographer, Tim Walker (studio manager) Q: What motivates you as a photographer? Palm Beach Photography Workshop Explores Farmers Market
by Katie Yates One thing we like to say at the Palm Beach Photographic Centre is, “Yes! We have a workshop for that!” Our impressive workshops cover every interest and every skill level. Many times, people are taking our classes in preparation for a trip. Regardless of your destination, we want you and your camera to be ready for whatever you come across! If you’re trying to capture that unique, jaw-dropping photo, you need to go where there is beauty, action, and vibrancy. Marketplaces have all this within a safe stroll—and you can sample great local food while you’re at it! Maybe you want to explore the bazaars of Istanbul or neighborhood fruit stands in Italy. Nothing gets to the meat of a destination quite like their marketplace. The fish slingers at the Tokyo seafood auction, the leisure of an Edinburgh sidewalk market, the glistening produce at a Swiss farm stand—these speak for the people and the indescribable quality of a place. They’re more than long lines and tired tourist traps. Of course, American farmers markets and flea markets also tell a story. They’re just waiting for the right photographer! The Palm Beach Photographic Centre is very lucky to be located in the heart of West Palm Beach. We’re right in the middle of the hustle and bustle
