Description

Photography is a people profession, and the skill to effectively relate to one’s subject is not an innate talent. Acclaimed photographer Paul Mobley has spent years honing portraiture skills that are deeply in tune with the human spirit. In the workshop Mobley will demonstrate how to capture a subject’s soul, every time in any circumstance. A gifted storyteller, Mobley will present images and describe circumstances behind a variety of challenging shoots, both in the studio, and on location. From working with seasoned professionals to rural American farmers to Russian Circus performers, his expertise runs the gamut. Attendees will discover how Mobley uses his camera and simple lighting tools to transform the face of a stranger into a portrait filled with heart, soul and unique character of every subject. Mobley will also discuss the making of his award winning coffee book entitled “American Farmer”.

Biography

Paul Mobley’s intimate portraits are an exquisite conveyance of the human spirit. His relentless passion for the work is evident in every wrinkle, every gaze, every smile and squint that grace the faces he’s photographed. From the fishing villages of Alaska to the palaces of Croatia, Mobley has traveled the world over to capture and celebrate humanity in its infinite forms.
Firmly grounded by his mid-western roots, Mobley’s early training as a photographer began at Detroit’s Center for Creative Studies, and continued in the New York studios of such leading photographers as Annie Leibovitz, Steve Steigman, and David Langley, where he apprenticed for many years before embarking on his own career. Since then, Mobley has successfully worked with a broad range of corporate, advertising, and editorial clients, including American Express, Sony, Citigroup, Ford, Compaq, Gourmet, Max Factor, Chevrolet, Microsoft, and many others.
American Farmer: Portraits from the Heartland was published in the fall of 2008 by Welcome Books. An ambitious work that has taken Mobley to nearly 200 farms and ranches all over the United States and features over 150 portraits, American Farmer celebrates the affirming spirit of rural life through the faces and words of the men and women who sustain and nurture the land. Epic in scope, yet deeply personal in substance, American Farmer follows in the photographic tradition of Richard Avedon’s watershed monograph In the American West and Mike Disfarmer’s Heber Springs series.
