Every successful studio photographer applies the same basic principles when controlling light in order to produce a desired look to the subject. The key is to know how to modify the raw light from strobes or continuous light sources using light modifiers such as umbrellas, soft boxes, gobos, diffusers and reflectors. The purpose of this all-day seminar is to explain and illustrate these basic principles and how typical studio equipment is used. It is designed for those who are thinking about moving into studio photography or have only a limited amount of experience with artificial studio lighting.
The all-important role of the “main light” is explored in detail along with the use of fill, accent and background lighting. Also covered is the question of lighting ratios and how to determine the correct exposure as well as obtaining an accurate white balance and the advantages of shooting in the RAW format. The seminar includes a presentation on different lighting styles and will end with a section on making choices for equipment in a start up studio.
