Renowned National Geographic photographer Raymond Gehman offers you a three-day introduction to digital cameras, including the use of standard equipment and features, software, and in-camera techniques for successful digital photography. His thirty years of experience in photojournalism provides invaluable stimulation for the discussions about digital photography and camera equipment that serve as a core feature of this workshop.
On the first day, Raymond will present a slide show of his artwork and will take you on the first of two photography field trips. During these he will expertly teach you proper camera handling and care, lens selection and best uses for wide angle, telephoto and macro lenses, auto focus and exposure, alternative exposure modes, image size and image quality, selection of proper white balance, how to use the camera’s histogram, best color space, and options in digital media and storage devices. During the next day’s second photo shoot you will learn the best way to use light, and the principles of composition, perspective, and visual design, and how and when to break these principles. The advantages and disadvantages of RAW files will also be reviewed, in addition to other discussions and demonstrations, all geared toward teaching you how to shoot better pictures.
On the second afternoon the focus will be on computer laboratory instruction in the basics of image downloading, editing and Adobe Photoshop. The third day will involve more in depth editing and Photoshop instruction with the goal being a final image file capable of producing a fine art digital print. You will also learn how to resize pictures for both the Internet and emailing. During photography field trips and computer lab sessions you will be given one-on-one attention, and at the end of the course, Raymond will offer a serious critique of your work.
It is very useful to bring your camera manual and an additional camera battery to this workshop. This workshop is most effective if photographing takes place in the early morning and at sunset, so make sure to get plenty of sleep the night before!
RAYMOND GEHMAN has worked for National Geographic Society since 1986. With three cover photographs and numerous books and articles, he has been on assignment in Yellowstone, Wyoming’s Bighorn Country, Florida’s Sanibel Island Gulf Coast, the Canadian Rockies, the rain forests of Belize, Icelandic glaciers and icebergs, deep, dark Polish forests, and rural China during the People’s Republic 50th anniversary celebration. He has documented grizzly bears, the vanishing prairie dog and wetlands, the ecology of fire, the aftermath of hurricanes, hot pools, and nocturnal Apache ceremonial dancers. Previously, he studied fine arts photography at Northern Virginia Community College and earned a degree in photojournalism from the renowned School of Journalism at the University of Missouri, Columbia. He worked for 11 years as a newspaper photojournalist in Montana and Virginia. Recently he has concentrated on more personal digital artwork, turning the ordinary into the extraordinary by shooting everything from apples to oranges, flowers to flying light domes, and glass globes to transcendent trucks, and transforming these subjects into dazzling impressionistic imagery. In 2010 his work will be exhibited from Virginia to Houston to Colorado.
